Drugs Abuse, Trafficking Destroy Lives
Editorial – June 26, 2023
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated on June 26 each year, commemorates the urgency, the global threat by tackling drug abuse drug trafficking.
The theme of the 2023 celebration is ‘Build Better: Support Healing, Prevention and Recovery’. This theme aims to highlight the key role of international cooperation in addressing the complexities of drug abuse and trafficking. Drug abuse and trafficking are complex challenges that threaten public health, security and human rights around the world.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), an estimated 275 million people worldwide have abused drugs at least once in 2020, of whom more than 36 million suffered from drug addiction. In addition, drug-related deaths have risen sharply and are at an alarmingly high 585,000 deaths per year, mostly due to opioid use.
The United Nations, the United Nations, governments, business partners and activists are working intensively together to tackle the drug and drug trafficking crisis. UNODC actively supports member states by facilitating international cooperation, providing technical assistance and organizing awareness campaigns.
In addition, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGASS) Special Session (UNGASS) in 2016 resulted in the adoption of a comprehensive Outcome Document recognizing the importance of a balanced drug policy and a health-focused approach. Nigeria, like many other countries, faces major challenges in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.Due to its geographic location and numerous international connections, the country serves as a hub for drug traffickers.
Surprisingly, the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported that over 40% of Nigerian youth engage in substance abuse, contributing to the high prevalence of substance abuse disorders. The NDLEA has increased its efforts to reduce drug abuse and trafficking. Recent arrests and drug seizures at international airports demonstrate the agency’s commitment to busting drug networks.
The NDLEA has also strengthened its intelligence capabilities, strengthened border control and initiated cooperation with international partners to exchange information and best practices. Fighting drug addiction requires a multi-pronged approach that includes prevention, treatment and support.
There is a need to increase investment in prevention programs for vulnerable groups, including youth, schools and communities. Treatment services, including rehabilitation centers, should be expanded and made accessible to people with addiction problems. Comprehensive awareness campaigns are essential for educating the public. Improving the general well-being of individuals is critical to reducing the abuse of illicit drugs.Investing in education, healthcare, employment opportunities and social support systems is key to tackling the root causes of drug abuse.
In addition, awareness campaigns should aim to debunk myths about drugs and their effects and encourage community involvement in solving the problem. Nigeria and other nations must consistently prioritize these efforts to protect their citizens and build a brighter future free from the ravages of drug abuse and trafficking.
