NDIC UPDATE: Senate, Ooni, Others Reflects on Speedy Amendment of the NDIC Act

The 9th National Assembly led by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan has assured of its commitment to expedite action towards the amendment of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) Act presently before the senate, as Ooni Ogunwusi and other traditional rulers present tasks NASS on speedy passage of the bill.
The Senate President Senator Ahmed Lawan gave the assurance on Monday at the NDIC 30th anniversary public lecture and book presentation with the theme: “Emerging Risks and Corporate Governance Issues in Banking”.
Speaking on the challenges faced by the NDIC in executing her duties, Lawan affirmed that the senate is aware of the challenges and assured that lawmakers will give immediate hearing to the NDIC Act amendment bill.

RegentAfrica Times at the event quoted the Senate President thus: “NDIC Act amendment bill will be a top agenda once the senate resumes plenary. I urge NDIC to rededicate itself to the service of the public by carrying out more awareness to the public on her activities.

In his address, the Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila who was represented by the Chairman House Committee on Banking and Currency Committee, Victor Nwokolo urged NDIC to produce a blueprint of profile of debtors in the country as well as non performing loans.

Earlier in his Goodwill message, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi  (Ojaja II), while commends NDIC for the good job done in the past 30years in protecting depositors funds, he appealed to the 9th National Assembly to expedite action on the amendment of the NDIC Act, says only when that is achieved that average Nigerians could repose their confidence on NDIC for a better service delivery.

Oba Adeyeye, further commended both the NDIC board and the cooperation for been a cover to Nigeria depositors in the country.

“Without the staff of this great institution, there will never be NDIC, thank you for your support and everything you are doing to make our country great, we are not there yet but we know we will get there,” he said.

The Emir of Kazuaure Najib Adamu advocated for more credit financing as this will help improve the economy as well and give more confidence in the country.
“Push the banks further to lend to entrepreneurs in the country, this will not only improve the economy, but it will also boost the confidence people have in the country, credit financing is important, people have confidence in NDIC and this is the evidence,” Adamu said.
In his welcome address, the Managing Director NDIC Umaru Ibrahim, while enumerating the achievements of the corporation acknowledged the crucial role played by its founding leaders.
